Pomperaug District Department of Health
Do I Need A Temporary Food Permit?

Situations when you need a temporary food service permit:

  • Any event where the public is allowed entry and food is being served.
  • For example:
    • Church dinners
    • Fairs
    • Fundraiser events
    • Game dinners open to the public
    • Community organization's suppers and breakfasts
  • Any commercial establishment (restaurant, itinerant vendors, etc.) which will be serving food to the public.

Situations when you do not need a temporary food service permit:

  • If the event is open only to members of an organization or congregation and not the general public.
  • For example:
    • Church pot luck suppers
    • Game dinners for club members only

  • If only non-potentially hazardous foods (cookies, desserts without cream fillings, etc.) are being served such as a bake sale or a school sporting event where pre-packaged snacks (potato chips, candy, etc.) are served.
