WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A DAY CARE
While the following may not be a complete list, it will give parents a starting ground of what to look for when choosing a day care.

Does
the child feel safe?

Is
the child comfortable with the surroundings and staff?
·
Is
the staff to child ratio adequate?
Connecticut
regulations require 1 staff person for every 10 children over 3 years of age or
1 staff person for every 4 children under 3 years of age.

Does
the staff help with separation anxiety when the parent leaves for the day?
·
Does
the center appear clean? Remember to look at this from a child’s level such as
the floors, toys etc…
·
Is
there child-sized furniture available?
·
Do
the other children appear happy?
·
Are
there enough activities and toys for children to have choices throughout the
day?
·
Are
the activities and choices age appropriate?
·
Are
there group and individual activities to help the child feel as part of a team
while allowing for their independence?
·
Is
personal expression encouraged?
·
Is
the staff interested in the child’s at home tendencies?
·
Are
parents allowed to visit unannounced? Are parent visits encouraged?
·
What
are the discipline policies?
·
What
is the handwashing policies for children and staff to prevent?
