The Pomperaug District Department of Health works in the area of health education, focusing on both chronic and communicable disease prevention. By providing screening programs to help with the early detection of disease, immunizations to prevent communicable diseases, and education programs to help residents lower their risk for certain illnesses, the Health District is striving to improve the health of our community.

An important aspect of the Health District's Community Health program is the monitoring and control of communicable or reportable diseases. Area physicians and laboratories are required by state law to report specific infectious diseases to the local Director of Health. The Director is then required to investigate the extent of these illnesses and apply control measures when necessary. This process is most important in infectious diseases arising from contaminated food or water where fast, acute intervention is paramount.
