REPORTABLE DISEASE INVESTIGATIONS

Influenza C Virus

An important part of the Health District’s responsibility is the monitoring and control of communicable or reportable diseases. Area physicians and laboratories are required by state law to report specifi c infectious diseases to the local Director of Health. The Director is then required to investigate the extent of these illnesses and apply control measures when necessary.

In addition to monitoring and investigating reports of communicable disease, the Health District is proactive in helping the community with the prevention and early detection of Lyme Disease and Rabies. Residents can bring ticks found on themselves and family mem bers to our offi ce; ticks are sent to the Agricultural Experi ment Station in New Haven for testing. Approximately
25% of the ticks are positive for Lyme Disease. Each
incident of rabies exposure is investigated. Six (6) animals tested
positive, 1 of which involved human contact. Three (3) people
re ceived rabies post-exposure treat ment. View chart
