LYME DISEASE

Deer Tick

Lyme Disease, which is transmitted by the tiny deer tick, can cause debilitating illness if not treated early. The deer tick is found in brushy, wooded areas and adjacent residential areas common to our Health District. Residents can bring ticks found on themselves and family members to our office for testing. The ticks are tested at the Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven.

To have a tick tested for Lyme Disease, put the tick in a zip lock baggie. Do not use tape or alcohol. Bring the tick along with the Tick Testing Form (see below) to the Pomperaug Health District office in Southbury. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will only test black-legged ticks (deer ticks). Results are usually available in 4-5 weeks.
